Prayer for Seed Sovereignty for the People

Genesis 1:11-12 (ESV)

11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants[e] yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

God created seed.  In this verse is the obvious intention that plants should yield seeds according to their kind to keep them multiplying in perpetuity, as in a cycle.

Genesis 1:29 (ESV)

29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

Once God created man in His image and likeness, He gave the food, seeds and all, to His new creation.

Seeds belong to mankind.  All mankind has a right to seeds to grow food.  It was given to us by our benevolent, holy Father in Heaven, and in all the wrathful acts He did in the Old Testament to reproach His wayward, ungrateful, rebellious children, He never took away our seeds.  Seeds are vital.

God’s word is vital.  In Isaiah 55, He likens His word to the rain and snow that fall from the heavens to water the plants so they will sprout and give “seed to the sower and bread to the eater”.  Like this process, that he was careful to re-establish just before the flood waters receeded in Genesis 8, His word, never comes back without having yielded a result.

Isaiah 55:11-12 (New American Standard Bible)

10″For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; 11 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.

In the case of His word, it returns the fulfillment.  In the case of the seed, it returns a harvest to feed you and more seed to sow for another harvest again.

For a long time, it was not legal to patent seed.  A patent certifies ownership, and since seed is a life form, not an invention, it stood to reason that just as we had abolished slavery (well, somewhat, see The 13th) we could not through governmental avenues certify proprietorship over life.  In fact, patents are specifically for inventions.  God already invented seed, so what was there for man to patent?

Enter Genetic Engineering.

Genetic Engineering, also known as and akin to Genetic Modification and more widely referred to as GMO, is the modification of a seed to create a slightly different plant than the parent plant was.  In this context, we are specifically referring to this being done in a laboratory through forced gene splicing that bastardizes seed by introducing genes from the other kingdom to attempt to recreate the plant with new characteristics.  Through the great American artistry of political lobbying, campaign contributions and high priced  jargon-juggling lawyers (no offence to honest, hard working attorneys here), our frenemies at Monsanto et al have convinced our elected officials to allow them to patent these seeds.

The double-talk goes like this:

For their patents, they argue that they are different, we invented them, they are a unique product, so we should be able to patent them.

Later on, when the crops are grown and it comes to discussing whether the “food” they produce is safe for human, or even farm animal, consumption, they argue that this “corn” is not fundamentally different from any corn grown from traditional seed.

This is how we suffer:

The newly patented seed costs farmers a king’s ransom.

The seed requires the use of that company’s companion chemicals to grow the crops.

The farmers are bound under restrictive agreements involving licensing and such so that they are prohibited from saving and sharing seeds.

Often these seeds cannot reproduce anyway.  The seeds in the crops they bring forth are barren!

And because their double-talk is heeded as though it is truth, the crop is never required to be tested before being fed to farm animals who’s flesh, milk or eggs we will later consume, or being sold to us at retail in the form of whole produce or ingredients in processed, packaged items.  So we are the living experiment.

Seed is one of the world’s most precious resources.  As valuable as it is, it is most valuable when it is in its natural, unadulterated, poison-free state, available to all to be saved, shared and sown as we need to feed ourselves.  It is the very basis of our food sovereignty and we are systematically being robbed of it.

Make no mistake, by the way, GMO will probably end soon as more and more people become aware and demand that their food be free of that kind of seed.  Nonetheless, as I write these words, the think-erati and the mad scientists inside of Bayer, BASF, Dow, DuPont, Monsanto, and Syngenta (all of whom also sell agricultural chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, processed foods and pharmaceutical drugs) are well on their way to their next idea that will protect their profits and continue their reign over the world food system.  This is why we need to pray.

Prayer for Seed Sovereignty for the People

Father God, you gave us seed at creation.  On that day, you deemed your creation Good and on the seventh day you deemed all your creation Very Good.

Even when you flooded the world, you re-established your system of seedtime and harvest.  Seed is our birthright according to Your holy word.

Really Nourish Prayer for Seed Sovereignty for the PeopleWe now come to you in prayer as the misguided members of our human family have attempted to match Your mastery in creation by tampering with genes to modify Your perfect design.  We forgive them Father but we pray now to reclaim sovereignty over all seed in Jesus’ name.  We reclaim our God-given right to save, use, sow, re-sow, exchange, share and sell our own seed in the name of Jesus.  We come against any plans that are currently in the works to continue to steal our seed from us in Jesus’ might name.

We pray for the proliferation of community-held seed banks all over the world to preserve the diverse plants you created.  We pray for an international moratorium on the genetic modification or genetic engineering of seed in the fashion of the multinational seed corporations and their hired scientists.  We pray for an international moratorium on seed patenting and the revocation of all existing patents on seeds and plants.

We hereby reclaim seed freedom. We reclaim poly-culture farming. We reclaim the biodiversity in food that we have had since the garden of Eden.  We reclaim this for our local community here (speak the name of your region or country), for the farmers and gardeners in our country, and for small farmers and gardeners all over the world in the might name of Jesus.

AMEN.

Prayer for Our Soil

Prayer is our most powerful weapon against every assault that comes at us.  Let’s face it: it was weapons of warfare that were “reformulated” for use in agriculture, and with names like Round Up, Ambush, Assail and Sniper, the war has just shifted from the jungles of Vietnam to crop fields all over the world.  The underlying axiom is that soil is a non-living thing that can be used and used up, manipulated, and poisoned with no consequences.  While there is some truth to that – the soil itself, the grains of rock and minerals are indeed non-living, the soil supports a rich panoply of life that coexists, a minute community of organisms that all function to support plants in every possible way, from earthworms that aerate the soil for roots and create humus from bio-waste to microbes that assist roots in water absorption.  They are vital.

The practices of monoculture farming (that is, planting only one crop in an area and considering any other plant an intruder in that space), chemical use to kill insects and weeds in the planted area, and Genetically Meddling Obscenely with seeds (also known as genetically modified organisms or GMOs) all consequently cause the eradication of soil life.  Land becomes fallow, as if raped and left for dead, and we suffer because year after year we have more desserts and less lively soil to grow healthy food in.

The weapons of our warfare are not carnal.  Satan’s hand in this soil destruction is evident.  His trademarks of greed, control, dishonesty and distortion or withholding of information that we, the victims of these war crimes are indeed entitled to, are clear evidence of his influence over the people and their corporations who perpetrate these crimes.  Therefore, I call you to prayer, because Jesus said if two or more are on earth in agreement about anything we ask for, it will be done for us by His Father (Matthew 18:19).

Please share this with every praying person you know.  I will post a French translation, please feel free to translate it into your native tongue as well as we get this prayer out.  More prayers to follow.  Thank you for joining and agreeing in prayer with me for the reclaiming and healing of our soil.

Prayer for Our Soil

Father God, you said in Genesis 2:7 that you formed us out of the soil, and so we pray

today for healing for our mother, the soil. We pray to return she that supports all life on earth back to the perfect state you created her to be in. You filled her with life and abundance, with life forms that are minuscule but no less important than other beings, each with a vital role you assigned in your infinite, unmatched wisdom.

Lord, she is under attack by the wicked and greedy members of our human family. We forgive the assailants in Jesus name and harbor no resentment against them. Nonetheless, we rebuke their evil plans that are clearly of Satan who comes to steal, kill and destroy our soil.

We now reclaim the soil all over this world you created and the abundance Christ died for us to have, even through the gifts of abundant, healthy soil and the diverse, nutrient-rich plants that flourish in her.
No weapon formed against her shall prosper.

In Jesus Name We Pray
AMEN

Africa to Biotech: We will not be your GMO poster children!

This statement was signed by twenty-four delegates from eighteen African countries to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization in 1998:

(As published in The GMO Deception, Krimskey and Gruber, 2014)

We strongly object that the image of the poor and hungry from our countries is being used by giant multinational corporations to push a technology that is neither safe, environmentally friendly nor economically beneficial to us. We do not believe that such companies or gene technologies will help our farmers to produce the food that is needed in the twenty-first century. On the contrary, we think it will destroy the diversity, the local knowledge and the sustainable agricultural systems that our farmers have developed for millennia, and that it will thus undermine our capacity to feed ourselves.

Sourcing Cooking Oil: Fundamentals for the Modern Food Revolutionary

The Really Nourish Movement is on location in

Sangre Grande, Trinidad

Being a child of immigrants from the Caribbean, the idea of fertile land and effortless nature – fruit trees spontaneously growing everywhere so much so that no one could really go hungry – was ingrained in my consciousness.  I had never set foot in the West Indies until I was 19, but I had already been immersed in the culture growing up first-generation American in Brooklyn, NY.

The truth, I am learning quickly, about the food in the Caribbean is a story of post-colonialism and the struggle of small countries.   Trinidad and Tobago is a leader in the region in many ways, and by some measures, is on par with developed nations.  Such a position can be a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, the nation has an economy to speak of.  She produces and packages a lot of her own food products, unlike many smaller, less developed countries that rely heavily on imports.  The imports she does get are of generally higher quality with more choices compared to the aforementioned little sister nations.  On  the other hand, with a population of more than 1.3 million, she is an attractive market for food products, and because she’s behind the curve on GMO regulations and her people are not demanding clean, organic food loud enough yet, a lot of stuff that other countries may not want gets dumped here.

Liza Soybean Oil GMO Trinidad
Click to see the label better.

Case in point: Liza oils.  This is a Cargill product, and Cargill is from the USA.  This was my first experience actually seeing a product claiming to contain genetically modified ingredients.  I wondered, since Trinidad’s government has not made a decision to require such labeling, what countries rejected this product that it ended up here.

I simultaneously wondered if Trinidadians are talking at all about GMOs and if any of them even know that this oil, which I am certain sells extremely well here based on the amount of shelf space the brand has in Sangre Grande’s Coss Cutters sumpermarket, is made with Frankenstein soy beans.

Thankfully, I brought along the Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil that I got as a free gift from my most recent Thrive Market Thrive Marketpurchase of US$79.00 or more.  But when that was about to finish I was rather concerned.  For the first week or so I was preparing for this eventuality.  I had assumed that in a country where one cannot walk a kilometer without seeing a coconut tree, there would be plenty good oil around.  Not so much!  I had finally found, after some searching, a coconut oil I could cook with,

but it was kind of orange-colored, a color indicating that it is not extra virgin cold pressed (The other process of making coconut oil involves heating up the separated fat in coconut milk and straining out nearly burnt solids, leaving you with an orangy-brown oil.  Cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil is colorless.), and probably grown with agrochemicals, given the scale of the producers who make those brands.   I finally found the good good – cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil in an herbalist shop in Arima, Trinidad, about 21 km (13 miles) away from where I live.  To put that into perspective, the North Shore Staten Island neighborhood of Saint George where I have my New York apartment is about 14 miles away from the Whole Foods market I travel to TriBeCa in Manhattan to shop at to get these kinds of items.

Shida Davis at Manzan Beach Trinidad
Me at the beach surrounded by coconut trees. Where’s the cold pressed in the market tho??

But WHY COCONUT OIL?

  • Because saturated fats are good for you and have been determined to have no link at all to heart disease.
  • Because it doesn’t oxidize in high heat.
  • Because it also contains very beneficial fatty acids for your bod.

I’ve found so far, in essence, that the challenges here in Grande are similar to the challenges in New York for Coconut Trees at Manzanilla Beach Trinidadthe active food revolutionary.

The Main Differences:

  1. Organic, Extra Virgin, Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil was a free gift from my most recent Thrive Market Order. It is clear in color and smells and tastes very pure.
Organic, Extra Virgin, Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil was a free gift from my most recent Thrive Market Order. It is clear in color and smells and tastes very pure.

In the U.S., we have more internet access to apps and product to meet our food revolutionary needs.

  2. In the U.S., we have organic labeling for produce.  More about that in an upcoming post.
  3. Outside of the U.S., some grocery items will actually indicate on the label that they are made with genetically modified ingredients. A few states in the union have that, but it’s not nationwide.  Instead, we have the DARK act awaiting the attention of the U.S. Senate.
  4. Outside of the U.S., we have organic grocery items from the European Union as well, where they actually have laws forbidding GMOs or at least demanding labeling.

So the trick is just to overcome the learning curve.  It’s not any different than the life of a food revolutionary States-side, though.  There’s a learning curve to overcome there too, one that most people haven’t addressed having lived there all their lives!

Bottom line: As a food revolutionary wherever you live, shop and eat, it is imperative in today’s world to arm yourself with knowledge about what is available around you – where it comes from, how it is produced, what the label is NOT telling you, how to get your hands on better quality versions.  It is possibly dangerous to your health to make ANY assumptions.  You will be richly rewarded for putting in the effort to accumulate your armament in the form of a better quality of life in general for you and yours.

ReallyNourish Bites: ‘Cado & Pro-Ve-lone on a Sprouted Muffin

This

is our answer to the the proverbial New Yorker’s breakfast. We have eschewed that #BaconEggandCheeseonaRoll habit in favor of this variation, which is nutrient rich, toxin free, and absolutely scrumptious!!!

‘Cado & Pro-Ve-lone on a Sprouted Muffin:

We used these organic ingredients:

Great on Sandwiches, Wraps and mixed with pasta!
Great on Sandwiches, Wraps and mixed with pasta!
  • 1/2 ripe Avocado
  • 1/4 cup of Red Onion, diced
  • 3 large pitted Green Olives, diced
  • Fresh Basil leaves
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Himalayan Sea Salt and Freshly Cracked Black Pepper to taste
  • Follow Your Heart Vegan Provolone-style slices
  • Food For Life Genesis 1:29 Sprouted English Muffins

Before we go on, let’s review that scripture, shall we?

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant 🌽🌾 on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. 🍊🍎🍋They will be yours for food.

And just for good measure, let’s peep the next verse also:

30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.🌿🌱” And it was so.

I like to consider these verses while I’m shopping for food:

🌾Seed-bearing plant = grains, including nuts and seeds = the English Muffins, the vegan cheese is made largely of Coconut oil

🍋Tree with fruit with seed in it = the avocado, olives & olive oil, pepper (yes, that’s a fruit!), apple cider vinegar

The salt was the only thing that didn’t fit any of these, but the many positive references to salt in The Bible give me God’s go ahead on that – in moderation, of course.

So now this is what you do:

  • Thaw and toast your muffin.
  • Scoop out the Avocado in to a bowl and add the diced onions, olives, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper to taste.  Mash it all together using the back of a fork to break up the avocado well.
  • Cut your muffin in half and put one slice of the vegan “cheese” on.  A little drizzle of olive oil on top or a schmear of vegan butter underneath will help it melt under the top broiler the way the dairy stuff would.
  • Put the avocado mix on, sandwich it up and dig in!  Or wrap it up in foil and pop it into a sandwich bag to go!
